The Impact of Weight Loss Drugs on Adolescents

This Youth Speech Contest is offered by Texas Lions MD-2 District. The Drug Awareness Council is an entity of Texas Lions District 2-E2. The Contest Rules and Eligibility are guided by our Lions Texas MD-2 District, as are the deadlines.

2026 Scholarships

Students entering the Drug Awareness Speech Contest have an opportunity to win up to $6,000 in scholarships. All applicants must be sponsored by a Lions Club within District 2-E2. The Lions Club and/or District 2-E2 pay all entry fees for the applicants they sponsor.

Applicants must be regularly enrolled in a public high school or a comparable education program in Texas, as a Junior or Senior in High School with intentions of attending a College or University upon graduation.

Students compete for the District 2-E2 Drug Awareness Speech Contest on January 17 , 2026, at Irma Marsh Middle School, 415 Hagg Drive, Fort Worth, Tx 76114.

Finalists compete for the MD2 Texas Lions Drug Awareness Speech Contest Online.  Online Orientationon is Saturday, May 9, 2026 and the  Contest will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026 at times set forth by the Sate Contest Chair.

Prior to orientation and the contest, contestants, parents, and Sponsoring Lions Club contacts will be provided with additional instructions by the State Contest Coordinator.

This year’s State contest First Place Winner must be able to participate in Orientation and the contest using online live audio and video communication tools. Zoom video conferencing will be used for the contest.

First Place Winners will be required to present his or her speech at the MD-2 Texas Lions Convention Opportunities for Youth Luncheon on Saturday, May 28, 2026 in Odessa, Texas. First Place Winners who do not attend the State Convention to present their essays will forfeit their scholarship award unless there is a medical or family emergency. High school graduation or school trips do not qualify as an emergency.

2026 Drug Awareness Speech Contest

2026 DISTRICT 2-E2 CONTEST RULES 

Weight loss is becoming more prevalent among adolescents. This topic asks you to weigh the benefits as well as the risks of prescription drugs for adolescents. Specifically examine the potential benefits of medications like GLP agonistics (Liraglutide and Semilattices) in treating obesity in adolescents. Discuss the potential risks and side effects including gastrointestinal issues, gallbladder disease, increased risks of fracture, and pancreatitis. Analize the long-term impact of these drugs on adolescent growth development, bone density and muscle mass. Debate whether weight loss is always the saftest way or most effective method of promoting adolescent health.
